  • I think there is just way too little data on the subject.

Like, for example, I used to organize some local PsyTrance gigs with DJs mostly (also artists, but the DJ sets were cheaper 🤷) and I know for a fact that at least 1 of the people that DJed on the gigs has a PhD in genetics. The other one, I’m not sure (he said he did have a PhD, but he was just way too plastered at the time to take him seriously).

I think most of them are genuinly afraid to actually say they’re highly educated in this or that field, because of how society might look at them if they do - you’re a decadent human being, you don’t deserve your PhD. Not to mention that for some of these people, this is like an alter ego for them. Some of them have normal 9 to 5 jobs, just like to do drugs and music on the weekends… I don’t have anything against this, of course, but society views these things differently 🤷.

  • 3D printers and laser cutters are significantly cheaper now.

I’ve fixed a few laser engravers for people that use them for jewelry. The current price of one for, let’s say, ring engraving (3 axes) is in the ballpark of about 7 to 10K euros. And we’re talking about the cheap Chinese copies here, not ones made by brand name companies.

This is still expensive in terms of personal ownership. Unless you use it for uour business, there is no way you can buy this solely for your YT channel.

You know how I joined reddit? None of the reasons everyone else might have, it just looked like a cool place. No one uses it where I live, except a few hundred people.

That being said, this was after years and years of me leeching off of comments on reddit. So, I thought I’d give the community something back… it’s only fair. I come from the forum scene, that’s how forums work. And let’s be honest, no matter how much we started hating a place, we never did this back in the day. Why? The info shared in those posts is probably more valuable than whatever we’re trying to achieve by doing this.

Of course, it’s your choice, your account. I’m just saying that I think it’s selfish and mean and that I would never do it. The free flow of info is what keeps the net going. You start tempering with that and you’re just fueling more users into mass media (if everyone did this, users can’t find any info about anything they’re troubleshooting and just return to doomscrolling on FB/IG/Twitter).
