I believe it goes back to world war 2. The country froze wages for economic stabilization. Some employers started throwing in health care as an incentive during a labor shortage. We are now stuck with this poisonous system.

My Linux knowledge isn’t what it used to be, but I believe you can easily make a thumb drive with a bootable distro. I would recommend taking whatever you choose for a test drive before you wipe a working system. That way you can see if there’s any weird stuff that doesn’t want to work.
Whoosh. Right over my slow head
Waiting tables at a casual+ restaurant? Yes. The ratio is mostly girls- in their 20s. The turnover is high, so there’s always new people coming in. You’re around each other constantly so it’s not awkward to strike up a conversation. Plus the parties were pretty fun.
I don’t think you’d have the same luck at McDonald’s, or in management, but serving at decent places I always had good luck.
When I was fresh in my career:
These are cool. I love the concept.
That makes more sense.
I know the real idea behind it. I just never liked it being summarized as defund. It’s more like restructure. Personally, I would be much more aggressive with an overall. It’s rotten top to bottom.
Ugh, “defund the police” is a terrible phrase if you actually want the movement to succeed. I wish they would have gone with something along the lines of “police reform”. Immediately every conservative glommed onto “now they want to abolish all police!”
We do need a massive overhaul to police. Unfortunately that means better marketing of the idea of it’s going to happen.
I did not know about this… And I happen to have a Synology nas.
I’ve tried switching to Linux many times over the years. There are many things about it that rock… But, unfortunately plenty that do not. Financially it doesn’t make sense for Adobe and others to support Linux (sadly).
Dual boot is an option, as you mentioned. However, Linux will run on a toaster. Fire it up on a thumb drive, or an old laptop, or whatever you’ve got and putz around. It’s fun just to explore.
But how would they sell more smoke detectors that way?
After a number of years with my first company (a household name), I quit and got an 80% raise. Based on how quickly my new company accepted my salary request, I’m pretty sure I could have asked for more.
Get a better paying job once you’ve got some experience. Raises won’t keep up with your value.
Don’t work yourself to the bone. There really are plenty of jobs that only require 40hrs/wk and pay the same or better.
Work somewhere with a good culture.
For games that actually come with all of their content? Not at all.
For games that have pay to win, scummy dlc, etc. Extremely.
