  • My layman’s understanding is that clinical narcissism is a pathological obsession with the perception of self (vs. sociopathy which is pathological obsession with self-interests, explained in a moment), and being an asshole is a transient state.

A narcissist will constantly have in mind what others think of them, and obsessively make sure other people believe they are good, socially better, morally superior, high status, etc. at any cost, and will topple and tear down other people to ensure that perception. Anyone who challenges that is a threat and will be treated with active hostility. They care what you think because it feeds their sickness.

A sociopath generally does not care what you think, unless you believing something is useful to them. They are typically equally focused on others’ perception of them but for a different reason. People are simply tools; means to an end. Reputation is an asset in their toolkit to get what they want, at whatever cost. Lack of remorse at a pervasive, chronic level tends to characterize sociopathy.

An asshole doesn’t necessarily mean either. I can be mean to you, or hurt someone to get my way, and that would make me an asshole. I don’t necessarily think I’m better than you and I do have the capacity to feel remorse. Asshole is a changeable behavior, or an attitude, and not a severe disorder.

TL;DR: Narcissists are specifically mentally sick, and can be assholes. But anyone can act like an asshole ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Hope and action go hand and hand, and it sounds like younger generations in those countries understand that well.

That’s a valid point; the literal definition of anarchy itself is the absence/abolition of hierarchies so that is pretty easily covered in identification. I’ll check it out, thank you! I’m a firm believer in leftist unity as we have the common overarching goal of equitable rights and QoL for all people.

  • I’ll have to do more reading then; thank you for sharing as well. It’s awesome to learn that Cuba’s gotten more progressive on LGBTQ issues. I wonder if the user I responded to is from the US since it’s been pretty bad here and we don’t have an established left party, so our “left” is a right wing donor class that pretends to maintain the status quo about 85% of the time.

I say to my knowledge since while I do identify as anarchist and believe healthcare, food, and shelter are bare minimum rights I understand as a human I always have more to learn and will never possess the breadth/depth of the entirety of anarchist/leftist ideology. I may currently hold blind spots and as such will need to learn and adjust in the future.

  • That’s completely valid. Thank you for sharing; like I said I’m still relatively new so hearing insight from more established users helps a lot. You’d think the natural association would be basic fucking human rights = common sense leftism but that is unfortunately not the case for established leftist governments at the minimum. (Spoken as someone who, to my knowledge, aligns leftist/anarchist)

We have to have each others’ backs because “allyship” is a finicky bitch.

  • So awesome to read a happy story!

The biggest thing about Linux, and the main hurdle for most users, is trial and error with different OSes.

It’s as personal as clothing taste; from size to material and color. What will fit on your body, what materials you can tolerate and what you like style wise are akin to what kernel you pick, your drivers and your desktop environment.

For some, a classic T-shirt and jeans work great out-of-box and some may need hypoallergenic materials and a different cut. And that’s all okay! It’s also the beauty of Unix/FOSS.

  • Preface to say I don’t necessarily hold these views, just my observation:

    • .ml is considered “tankie”

    • Blahaj.zone is shitposty and pretty solidly trans-friendly/oriented

    • .world is “neutral,” and I think federated with most instances (I joined this one bc I was brand new here and it seemed beginner friendly, but I lean further left so ¯\(ツ)/¯ may instance hop in the future)

    • Lemm.ee runs similar to .world but maybe slightly more right leaning

    • Sh.it.justworks is predominantly techie

    • Sopuli.xyz seems primarily meme-centric

    • Feddit.org seems neutral-ish and more EU based, beyond that don’t know much

I’m sure there’s others I’m missing/stereotypes I’m wildly wrong about or not yet informed but that’s what I’ve gleaned so far.

  • I’m sorry to hear you’ve had so much trouble with Linux. I understand the frustration that comes with Unix based OSes especially after being a heavy Windows user for years.

I did a bit of searching on your profile and saw you’re dual-booting with Windows on the same hard drive. I personally had issues with trying to set that up myself (Windows is a finicky, jealous b****). My own solution was installing my distro of choice onto a separate hard drive - if you can eventually do that I recommend it.

I know you’re getting a lot of flak for your post but it’s good to see honest opinions from people who genuinely want to try Linux but aren’t necessarily the same level of hyper-nerd as the typical demographic here.

Having information from a wider opinion pool will help in understanding how to get Linux to more of the population - but that’s a side tangent.

It’s encouraging to see that you are still open to trying in the future and taking a break from it can help you clear your head and come back with fresher eyes.

Unfortunately I don’t have much experience with NVIDIA drivers, and probably a similar amount of troubleshooting as Mint but I’ve found EndeavourOS to be friendlier to a middle-upper tech/gamer use case. Mint, for me, seemed cold and “office”-y and didn’t work well for me as I don’t only use my browser and word processor.

That said, distros are an almost ridiculously personal choice and part of that is trial and error. If you haven’t gotten the chance I recommend test driving a couple other distros in an Oracle VM (for user-friendliness) so you can decide what you like the feel of before committing to an install again, if and when you feel ready.

Good luck and godspeed until then.

I don’t have any advice for this exact problem but if it’s any consolation Firefox has randomly gotten offended at my video drivers and bricked my build. Multiple times. I use Librewolf when I can now.

That is hilarious though, sending frustrated IT vibes your way in both empathy and hopes it’ll help you reach the critical mass of superstition for the problem to fix itself before you have to threaten to take a hammer to it.

  • I deleted messenger once I finally convinced the people I give a shit about to switch over to safer platforms. Hadn’t posted on or touched FB in years at that point though. That also prompted me to move to Lemmy (my only real feed-based media consumption); that plus the constant influx of doomscrolling bullshit after the latest US election.

I don’t “use” Xitter and haven’t for many, many years aside from news for legitimate emergencies that had no other alternative. Stopped using IG after they tried to copy TikTok.

TL;DR: Enshitification + increasing threat to human rights
