This is what Gentoo needed. I’ve been using it for a long time and love it as it is but sometimes when there’s a bunch of slot conflicts or a compile error it makes me wish I just dealt with binaries instead. Now that we have the best of both worlds, it will make Gentoo appeal to a wider userbase and make it less painful to use on older hardware.

Any distro that’s based on an existing one but changes or adds very little to it. There are so many dead Ubuntu and Debian reskins

I love seeing stuff like this! I think anyone who is used to windows should try Linux out on a cheap laptop and see how they like it.

GNOME

Not necessarily UI but the overuse of javascript on most websites. It makes browsing the web on low power and old devices a nightmare.

Yeah it’s great, It’s never been a better time to be a Linux user. There’s always something to look forward to and we get more support every year. I’m going to give cosmic a shot when they release it.

I used the Equilux GTK theme for years but it’s been abandoned since 2018 and GNOME has changed a lot since then. I switched to Colloid and it didn’t take much to tweak it to my liking, mainly reducing the size of the titlebar and panel.

I wish. Even xfce will get wayland support before they do.

It sucks that cool projects like hyprland are usually riddled with toxic weirdos that ruin it. It also sucks that there’s not much to choose in the wayland space that’s usable and actively developed but I refuse to use hyprland after seeing this.

Papirus is by far the best icon theme for Linux. It has icons for even the most obscure and niche applications

Yeah, that’s the point. Again, the average user (as in desktop user) gains nothing from using a different init. There may have been some crazy server-side scenario where the type of init you used actually mattered but we’re talking about desktop Linux, which the answer is a clear-cut no. I’m not stopping the people that are interested in trying a different init out, I’m just telling them that there’s little to no benefit in the end if they’re expecting an improvement in performance or whatever else.

Enlightenment is such an underrated desktop but development for it is very slow moving. Only a few people work on it and most likely in their spare time but for what it does and how little resources it pulls makes it very impressive. It’s pretty much a fully featured desktop and only takes a little over 100mb
