Flypaper strips can be effective depending on the severity and location of the issue and are fairly cheap. It won’t be 100% effective, but it might help. Just be very careful about where you place it if you have any pets or children.

I’m glad it works for you, but I always hated getting to work very sweaty and then being smelly for the rest of the day when I biked.
I go to great lengths to not use Amazon but in the US, unless you live in a large urban area Amazon and Walmart have systematically run most smaller, neighborhood retailers out of business already. If I wanted to go to a bookstore that wasn’t a Barnes and Noble, I would need to drive about an hour and a half.
For what it’s worth, I saw your posts on Yiffit when you found all this out after the fact. It’s a little inconvenient on desktop, but on mobile it’s actually very intuitive to have separate accounts to specifically browse an instance by local. You can usually even have the same display name if that’s important to you as well.
In the future though you always do need to keep instance politics, culture, and rules in mind when choosing a daily driver account because it is important.
The admins of Lemmy.ml are staunchly against any pornographic material being federated to their instance. This stance is unlikely to ever change and you should not expect it to.
Personally I would just recommend keeping two accounts if this is your problem - one general purpose and another for being able to view NSFW.
I used to really love music discovery on Spotify. I now find it’s the same ald songs over and over. It finds what you like and reinforces that rather than gradually expand it.
I’m in the same boat. For years now it’s felt like every daily mix and discovery playlist is 10 songs I recently just listened to on repeat and then 2 songs that aren’t even tangentially related and I’m left questioning why they were being shown to me.
Just to add to what Daemon provided in the post, aside from hitting the comment button you can also hit the ‘view source’ option from the comment drop-down menu in Jerboa and it will show deleted and mod/admin removed comments as well in plain text.
Not sure if this is intended behavior or not as I actually appreciate the ability to do so. It helps to not lose context in conversations with deleted/removed material while still providing a small barrier to a casual observer.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who found the world resets frustrating. I agree that the world is interesting and atmospheric, but as someone who enjoys thoroughly exploring, the resets just kept ruining my immersion into the world. Maybe one day I’ll go back to the game.
You can Ctrl+select multiple languages. Do you also have Undetermined+English+whatever else is relevant set?
In my experience the federation issues others are referring to don’t report missing comments because they aren’t technically there on anything but the home instance so I’m inclined to believe it’s something different.
Go to your settings and make sure your language preferences include “undetermined” as well as your preferred languages. Lemmy only shows comments that match your preferences.
Yeah, I think ultimately my expectations got the best of me for this one. I’d heard nothing but praise of the game for so long and wasn’t looking at the game through the lens of the development limitations of it’s time period. I’ll still probably finish the game, but I am a bit disappointed and probably won’t play the second.
At this point I’m definitely going to finish the game, so we’ll see if my opinions change at the end of it all. If I’m still struggling to get into it I’ll definitely give Black Mesa a shot so I appreciate the suggestion and clarification.

If that’s truly what the game is about I don’t know that it’s for me then. Outdated graphics aren’t actually a big issue for me and with the updated patch on the base game they really are not bad at all.
Most of my issues come from game direction and design. I can only run straight down a hallway with no idea why for so long before it just starts to feel tedious. If the Black Mesa map redesigns helps to give more area traversal options I would definitely think again though.
I was planning on doing a playthrough of HL2 after the first, so I haven’t actually played it yet. The first has kind of left a sour taste in my mouth though and as far as I can tell the second isn’t a huge change in terms of the issues I felt the first had. If they did a good enough job with Black Mesa to fix the hallway simulator vibes of the first I may definitely have to give it a shot.
I don’t mind the dated mechanics and graphics as much. I do mind the lack of player agency and objectives or direction. A lot of similar shooters of this period really survived on the atmosphere they created and I just don’t feel that in this game. It just makes it hard to overcome the “why am I playing this, I’m very bored” feelings.
I was playing through the patched version of the original. I picked up the entire Valve bundle for a few bucks on sale about a year or back.
As someone who is an outsider to the series, I was under the impression that Black Mesa was a unique game set in the same universe?

I was always a console gamer in my childhood so I missed the boat on a lot of the most iconic PC games.
I feel like I might catch some heat for this one, but recently I tried Half Life 1 and I just couldn’t get into it. The game just feels so…lifeless. I got about 10 chapters in, which is like 60% or so of the way through, and every moment just feels like I’m playing House of the Dead in the arcade, walking down a hallway and shooting jumpscare enemies. I think the lack of any semblance of story or motivation for what I’m doing is especially egregious to me.
That’s definitely the case then as most major instances pushed updates around then. Lemmy.World has been particularly bad since it’s still running on the old 0.18.x version of Lemmy.
The bugs have been opened and the devs made aware of the issues. For now just be patient as things get worked on as it is the holiday season.
