No I did not have GPU accel. I’m curious what you are referring to losing work due to a misclick? Personally I don’t use desktop icons. I’m a previous i3 user so I am used to using my computer with a non traditional interface.

As someone who tried out MacOS in a VM out of curiosity I don’t find gnome to be like MacOS at all in overall functionality. I think to most people it just looks like Mac because top bar, dock and some design choices. Really though gnome is much more like Android. MacOS felt extremely clunky to use vs gnome’s fluid workspace and app switching.

It doesn’t use open weather unfortunately. It uses the Norwegian Meteorology Institute and their weather prediction is poor/entirely inaccurate for much of the world. I do wish open weather was an option especially since it’s easy to get your own weather api key.

Agree, the old windows blue screen would sear your retinas, could definitely be tuned down a bit.

If you have steam installed as a system app then copy the .desktop file from /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop to your /home/yourusername/.local/share/applications. Once you have the .desktop file in local, edit the desktop file and go down to the first Exec= line and and the -silent switch at the end.

You could use the android studio flatpak, install flatseal to ensure the app doesn’t have permissions you don’t want.

If you like the interface of the steam deck in desktop mode and you are most familiar with Ubuntu, you could try Kubuntu… which is just Ubuntu with the KDE desktop environment like what the deck has. Theres also the KDE Fedora spin. If you do want to go the Arch route you could install EndeavourOS, which is practically arch with a little bit of hand holding to get you on your feet quickly - and to help you learn the ropes.

You may have to look into figuring out which driver Linux is using for your touchscreen then blacklist that module so that it doesn’t load anymore.

Well not really because I never stuck around on KDE very long. But I’m aware you can have tiling on any DE if you want. Its about the out of box experience you get on Pop. Its also important (for me) that the tiling is done automatically, no fiddling.

I think their current modified gnome is the best desktop that exists anywhere. Cosmic is a full desktop environment with an actual (auto) tiling window manager… a combo I think should be more common in desktops. The way they implement the tiling makes it really easy for beginners to use because you can turn it on/off by keyboard shortcut or clicking the plugin icon, and because you can just drag n drop windows to change their tiled positions (along with keyboard shortcuts if preferred). It’s hard to go back regular “window managers”.

The System76 devs have good ideas, they seem really cool, and sane! They have been a net positive for the Linux community and desktop development IMO. I am SO hyped for the new Cosmic DE!

I have been taking the flatpak route as well lately where applicable. Sure many people see flatpak as bloat, but very few things are installed as system apps and my $HOME stays cleaner. There’s also this gem https://github.com/valvesoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3671. I want as few things as possible to have rwx to my home dirs.

Hey that’s awesome! I love that app! I actually ended up pulling it from the Mint repo and installed it on my pop laptop a couple of years ago… I have not bothered to update it but it still works just fine. I will look forward to using yours when the time comes.

Luckily you can deselect the eos specific packages during install.

I only use wayland on my t480 and it makes a noticeable difference on that machine, but not on my desktop with Nvidia. I have been testing it for a couple of days on my Nvidia box though. So far I’ve found it mostly works better than I expected but some games played on Nvidia+Wayland makes it look like my monitor is about to die with the weird flickers it does at times and under certain conditions (like loading screens it’s unbearable), otherwise performance is good and seems to lock in at 144hz. Also does anyone know why there are no settings in the nvidia-settings app under Wayland?
