Separate apps for various retail stores. I don’t want a home depot app. I don’t want a kroger app. We have a generic app for this category called a web browser. If you want me to download a specialized app for your store, I assume that means that my browser does not sufficiently breach my privacy for your “business purposes.”

The Joycons were an absolute disaster and ruined the portable experience. I got 4 of them repaired. When they inevitably broke again, I gave up and bought a pro controller. Precariously balancing the Switch on your lap or setting it on furniture so you can use a pro controller is not a handheld. Still had lots of fun with the games on it, but the experience should have been better. Nintendo has building controllers for decades, you would think they could at least begin to approach competency.

Cell carriers in the US releasing 3G+ technologies branded as 4Gs should have gotten the FTC on a crackdown, but regulatory capture and it is all just marketing fluff. My 5G phone’s internet sucks compared to the Spectrum I have at the house. Spectrum sucks compared to the Frontier fiber alternative, but I am currently in the Spectrum part of the cycle of having to alternate between them to avoid paying 2x as much. I think Spectrum is starting to realize that they suck because there full rate for my current plan is only about $5 more than Frontier’s promo rate. I imagine they are hoping that I dislike switching enough that I’ll eat the extra cost to avoid switching. If Frontier would just let me have the promo rate all of the time, they would get more money from me, but I guess too many people are too lazy to switch for them to do that.

I give them some water, because it is probably pretty scarce and valuable by 2074. Then I ask them if they remembered to bring me the lottery ticket numbers for the big lottery that I win in October of 2024.

I have graduated to the stage of my career where I believe “I have to teach these kids how to do things correctly before my coworkers corrupt them, or they learn bad behaviors on their own.” I was thrown in the fire early in my career and am trying to be the mentor I wish I had. I know where my knowledge gaps are, but generally know who to rely on. I definitely generate the most value when I stick to my expertise, but I still try to learn more whenever possible.

I should remember this crap for my next self-evaluation (I hate that crap).

My first Linux installation was done using Red Hat CDs that I purchased for around $20. Probably around 1996. Patching was difficult. Drivers for many pieces of hardware didn’t exist. Remember Plug and Play was pretty new at that time frame. Lots of manual resolution of things like driver interrupt conflicts (boards had physical jumpers that you could move to change which IRQ they asserted). Looking back on it, I can’t believe any of us were doing it. But the eventual payout was wonderful. I can’t imagine what 1996 me would think about how easy something like the latest Ubuntu is. I would probably be pretty awed because I have a decent understanding of the massive amount of work that has been poured into the ecosystem now to make it what it is today.

All that said, I will always have a soft spot for Solaris on an Ultraspark. That shit worked great.

I am actually hoping the 4080s causes a $200 price drop on the 7900XTX. I think the 24 GB of memory makes it the best long-term prospect.

I had an HP laptop in the early 2000s, the hard drive crashed (my wife set some mail on top of it and the mail had a large advertising magnet in it). I bought a replacement. When I opened it up, the hard drive connector was HP proprietary. A replacement drive from HP was $475 for the same size that I paid $80 for an industry standard drive. I bought a replacement laptop instead and have been warning people against HP for the last 20 years. Many people come to me for IT help (entire extended family), so I am sure I have hurt HP some. Their printer drivers are the biggest bloatware crap too. Absolutely scum company.

I am going to replace my 980ti this year. Most expensive GPU I ever bought, but I have been using it for almost 8 years. I am not optimistic about my next one lasting that long. Waiting for the Supers to release so I can get some benchmarks and see what prices do.
