Yes. I would assume that the problem is in X11 or Wayland before thinking it could be SDDM, frankly. But even then, googling “Linux login screen” doesn’t immediately reveal SDDM to be the point of concern.

Take a look at Ubuntu trying to teach newcomers how to ask a question.

And if they documented their research process, you’d say “tldr just ask the question.” Stop trying to be paternalistic and gatekeepy. Just answer or don’t.

I don’t know about other people, but it’s way easier to google something than to ask a question and then wait for the answer. I’m not OP, but if I’ve asked a question, it’s only because I’ve exhausted my ability to find the answer on its own.

How do you think the OP is supposed to know that “SDDM” is the issue to look up? You don’t get to enforce another person’s effort. If all you want to provide is "you’re looking for ‘SDDM,’ that would provide help and empower them without sounding like you’re biting the newbie for not knowing everything.

This sort of passive-aggressive “help” feels like a relic of the early 2010s we could do without.

Maybe not exactly the same thing, but I have had pretty heavy Minecraft building binges that leave me looking at IRL buildings thinking, “huh, I wonder how I’d build that in Minecraft. Obviously I could put a full block there, but that detail would be sub-block, so maybe I could imply that with a chiseled variant…and that’s brick, but it’s a dark and weathered red brick, so I guess I’d have to use…maybe terracotta? And dang, that curved archway would be murder to recreate accurately, this building might need to be at 1:1.5 scale to even do it justice…”

I’ve regularly found a solution to my problem on SO, only to discover that I need to figure out how to break my system exactly the same way the asker did before the fix will work.

We just did this a month or so ago. My wife’s old Pixel 4a got a data-only SIM, and we locked it down extensively with a profile for each of the older kids (9 and 7). Websites and apps are allow-only. They can call or text us through Google Chat, and we also allow Pokemon Go and a couple of other things. We call it the “Family Phone,” and they don’t have unlimited access to it, but it’s handy to have something to hand them when they leave the house without us.

The idea has been around for about fifty years, but the first human clinical trials were only about a decade ago and COVID was the first large-scale human deployment.

Now, in fairness, they were almost entirely ready at the time. I would imagine, without COVID, we probably would’ve still seen mRNA vaccines become mainstream already, though maybe last year or this year instead of in 2021. But COVID stepped up the final stages of approval significantly.
