  • It’s considered a positional stalemate, and that is politically advantageous for Russia. Both parties have been able to set up considerable defensive positions, making progress extremely costly. Both parties are still fighting for progress nonetheless, where Russia has the most trouble achieving it and Ukrainian forces are making small gains (field by field) on a consistent basis. But knowing that the frontlinie is many miles deep and there is intense trench warfare to make a few yards progress… There will be no swift or decisive victory on either side.

Putin has most of his followers convinced that he is fighting nato backed nazis. So even when Russian war tactics are brutally inefficient and the losses in personell and equipment are enormous, there is little internal political backlash. Internationally the conflict is seen as a regional dispute. Since Ukraine isn’t a part of a large international alliance. Western sanctions on Russia aren’t as impact full as they could have been.

It’s looking likely that the war in Ukraine is going to last a very long time. With guerilla attacks on Russian territory becoming more likely and higher in frequency. Russia doesn’t have the equipment left for large scale invasions, doesn’t have the money to create meaningful reserves. And the kremlin needs defensive power in other places along its border.

European and western sentiment is that Putin will not stop until the old ussr borders are back under his control. And being securely and unquestionably positioned as world superpower.

  • 6k euro for an education that I could enjoy, find employment in and be happy. 12k for the education I really want, it’s some obscure hyper specialist training on a European level (hence the cost)… I was close to finding an employer who was willing to help fund it. But I couldn’t get enough money together to make it work. Anyway, hoping to start next year with a new job in the field and work my way up, until I can afford it. Money would mean a significant shortcut in my career.

Take googles 60 billion profit and stop complaining. But unfortunately that’s not reality.

The growth of YouTube’s revenue has always been steadily climbing. But it’s far too slow to be a competitive investment. It’s only like a percentage or two per year, that’s not a rate that investors want to see. So yeh Google is putting like a couple of percent more ads on YouTube every year that is necessary to stay somewhat relevant in the market.

Of course there is a limit, at some point you can’t put more ads into your system. I think they feel they are at that limit, and they are, it’s getting insane with the ads. . They try to get some percentage of people to stop ad block or some percentage to subscribe.

But it’s just delaying the inevitable demise. At some point they are out of people to milk for money, so growth will stop. So investors will pull out and YouTube will stop existing. This is just how it works.

Stop feeling bad. Someone or something will take its place. It will start small and grow and grow until it also dies. They could have 60 billion profit ‘forever’ but that’s not how capitalism works. Capitalist are going to capitalist and there is nothing you can do about it. It doesn’t matter what business model, or user experience, or quality. No capitalist cares. You and I care, but you and I are just secondary, afterthoughts, inconveniences. They just want us to do as they say, play the game, and stop complaining…

But it’s already a business that is making money and turning a profit for Google. And when I say Google I mean Alphabet, but that’s just set up to obfuscate, so Idc.

  • Eating meat requires a victim. You literally have to kill another being for it. You can’t deny this, because it’s a fact. And vegans do not want to participate in that. This isn’t complicated. You choose to participate in the victimization of animals when you are eating an animal that is grown and/or killed for your products. Doesn’t matter the circumstances, doesn’t matter how, why, when. The animal that is killed is a victim, doesn’t get much clearer than that.

You’re making it out to be black and white because a child can do this logic. But it’s not black and white, there are plenty of edge cases to discuss, and that’s literally what the vegan community is doing all the time with many proponents of many different opinions.

But we’re vegan because we accept this simple logic and wish to minimise it as much as possible. And food is the easiest, since our body doesn’t need it. Plenty of vegan solutions available for the many cases where animals are victims. No need for leather, no need for wool, no need for honey, etc. Minimising animal victims is the goal here. It can never be zero, it can never be black and white.

  • Literally out of every dietary research into the impact on health, the vegan diet comes out on top. Like, the amount of misinformation you have to swallow and uncritically accept to come to the conclusion you’re drawing means that any conversation with you is pointless. There are close to a hundred million vegans on the planet. We know things. They have been researched. Science. Try it sometimes.

Edit, yeah you can downvote it. But

"Households should select predominantly plant-based diets rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, pulses or legumes, and minimally processed starchy staple foods. The evidence that such diets will prevent or delay a significant proportion of non-communicable chronic diseases is consistent.”

" A well-planned vegetarian or vegan diet can provide the nutrients we need […] vegetarian dietary patterns may have a health benefit when compared to more traditional dietary patterns. Vegetarian or more plant-based diets are typically higher in fruit and vegetables, whole grains and dietary fibre while being lower in saturated fat, sweets and non-water beverages (such as sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol).”

"It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes […] Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease.”

“It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases […] The results of an evidence-based review showed that a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease. Vegetarians also appear to have lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than nonvegetarians. Furthermore, vegetarians tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates.”

"Anyone can follow a vegan diet – from children to teens to older adults. It’s even healthy for pregnant or nursing mothers. A well-planned vegan diet is high in fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. Plus, it’s low in saturated fat and cholesterol. This healthy combination helps protect against chronic diseases.

Vegans have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer than non-vegans. Vegans also have lower blood pressure levels than both meat-eaters and vegetarians and are less likely to be overweight.”

Get informed and stop the bullshit.

  • I mean I agree it’s a radical break with what is considered the norm. But it’s a fast growing ethical sentiment that we are not treating our fellow earthlings with the respect they deserve. So if anything a vegan acts from more compassion, more inclusivity. And the fact that this sounds to you as if vegans are out of touch, just speaks to how much you are out of touch with this growing sentiment. It’s not as if vegans are acting from some kind of misguided ethical principles. The fact that we lay bare that the unjust treatment of animals is a choice, turns this around. It puts the onus meat eaters to justify their actions. But then they come on forums like this and complain about how we are out of touch and lost perspective and critical thought. It’s just not true.

  • I think I do recognise the feeling. There isn’t really a big difference remembering something that happened a long time ago or from a dream. There is when you get a physical reminder (smells in particular seem to be a strong trigger). Both dreams and memories work in the same way from the perspective of your own subjective experience. Especially dreams have a very hard time making physical memories, since your body is in rest. But when you’re awake and especially when you’re aroused in some way, your body connects the memories to the physical sensations. In this sense your body is a memory bank and it stores your life. Your body grows, cleans, encapsulates, expulses, incorporates, so do the connections change or get lost in pure subjective memory.

It’s this that can explain why old memories and dreams can feel so much alike.

  • Just anecdotally from my own life, they become more like thinking back to a dream you had last night. There is a knowledge of, or a familiarity with the emotions, but a lack of definite certainty about the content. You know it’s yours, you know what it meant, you know what you experienced, but without reality to guide you and only through memory. When you do experience the guidance of reality, through songs, words, sights, smells, then the clarity/intensity can also come back. And that doesn’t fade or I wouldn’t use that word, you can get so familiar to it that it isn’t carrying the weight it once did. Loss feels like loss, shame like shame, love like love… It’s not that it fades into nothing, or that the quality of it diminishes. It’s more that you bought a summer coat but it’s winter now, it’s not needed anymore. Still beautiful, still wearable, still looking good on you, just that it isn’t the right thing to wear right now.
